Reflecting a growing priority for UK businesses to proactively improve road safety
New data from training and compliance expert TTC has revealed a 74% increase in the popularity of driver training e-learning in the last year. Over 54,000 online business driver training hours were completed in 2024 including Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). This surge underlines the growing commitment of UK businesses to reduce road risk and fulfil their duty of care obligations, contributing to safer roads for everyone.
With tight fleet budgets, businesses also increasingly recognise the importance of investing in end-to-end risk management solutions to profile drivers. By identifying potential risky driving behaviour and plugging knowledge gaps early on, companies understand that overall cost savings can be delivered with accident repair and vehicle off-road time significantly reduced.
The breadth of companies choosing targeted e-driver training varies from businesses with less than a hundred vehicles to large organisations managing thousands, many of which operate a blended fleet. Meanwhile, with an increasing number of companies opting for grey fleets as an easier, cost-effective alternative to running, owning, or leasing a company car fleet, choosing e-learning to reduce road risk amongst the UK’s 14 million grey fleet drivers is an encouraging trend, says TTC.
TTC offers the industry’s only all-in-one, tech-driven, cloud-based driver risk and compliance platform, TTC Continuum. While many businesses initially adopt Continuum for its essential driver and licence checking features, TTC reports a growing number of companies utilising the platform for end-to-end risk management, using it to monitor driver behaviour and deliver targeted intervention training. Continuum is designed by safety experts and data scientists to aggregate driver risk and compliance data, using algorithms and automation to extract insights and make personalised training recommendations.
Users can optionally integrate other in-vehicle and connected vehicle telematics data into Continuum to expediate tasks like tracking driver working hours, processing expenses and monitoring driving behaviour. Smart tools also help drivers upload documents and access their personalised training on-the-go, via the Continuum mobile app.
The 50 e-learning and video modules delivered by TTC and integrated into Continuum, range from Hazard Awareness and Defensive Road Positioning to Eco-Safe Driving and Smart Motorways. The bite-size modules are designed to improve skills and develop safer behaviours. As more businesses seek to improve their eco credentials they can also deliver knowledge to drivers which will help companies transition to alternative fuel vehicles and safely reduce their carbon footprint.
Comments Rich Hickin, Group Sales Director for TTC Group, “It is great to see the range of companies choosing e-driver training. Whether fleet car, commercial fleet, or grey fleet drivers, those who drive for work are often under time pressure. More employers are choosing to implement online risk assessments to identify targeted driver training requirements, so importantly, drivers are able to access vital e-learning modules, easily incorporating them into their daily schedules.
“With the ease and accessibility of driver risk assessment, targeted e-learning, and feedback into driver profiles, it is also reassuring to witness more companies committing to on-going driver-training, rather than piecemeal. This growing commitment to driver safety and reducing road risk can only be applauded.”
Constantly seeking to improve Continuum, TTC recently invested in a redesign, delivering a modern interface, enhanced usability bringing crucial insights and tools to the forefront, including compliance tracking performance, and driver detail. New customisable dashboards have also been added which are tailored to a driver’s unique workflow, highlighting the information most relevant to them.
