Workshop Overview
This combination of workshop, on-road driver coaching, and hands-on practical two-day training course is designed to develop competence and awareness of both road risk and health & safety requirements when using a 3.5t tipper or dropside vehicle on both construction sites and on the public highway.

1 or 2 drivers

At the end of the course driver’s will be able to:
Demonstrate how to undertake a dynamic risk assessment when dropping off any loads.
Demonstrate how to load correctly and how to restrain loads with ratchet straps and use tipper controls.
Explain the max pay load for their vehicle and how to calculate weights, including passenger and loads.
Demonstrate enhanced observation, anticipation and concentration while driving in all road environments.
Demonstrate safe and efficient driving within the confines of a construction site.
Course Outline
Introduction
- Health and safety requirements.
- Provision of use of work equipment regulations (PUWER).
- Undertaking thorough vehicle checks.
3.5 Tipper or Dropside Vehicle
- Safe driving practices both on road and on site.
- Hazard and speed limit recognition.
- Safe vehicle manoeuvring, with or without banksperson.
- Maximum height and width of vehicle.
- Calculating payloads, axle weights and gross weights.
- How to undertake a tipping exercise safely and avoiding any risk of a rollover.
- Correct use of ratchet straps, blocking and where to place the strap hooks on correct load bearing parts of the vehicle.
- The forces acting upon a load while braking, cornering and accelerating.
- Complete a ten question knowledge assessment.
- Demonstrate safe loading and restraining practices, dynamic risk assessments and use of all controls.
Course review
- What drivers are taking away in terms of knowledge and awareness.
- Complete and discuss the training report.
- Advice for ongoing development.

Logistics
Our delivery is facilitated in a classroom, in-vehicle and in a secure yard or compound or construction site.
Classroom
To facilitate the classroom element of this course we will require:
- A suitable room to comfortably seat all attending.
In-vehicle
For in-vehicle training we will require:
- Drivers to be able to read a number plate from 20 metres in good day light with or without corrective vision.
- Produce their driving licence or if they do not have it with them, agree to undertake a check with the DVLA.
- All vehicle lights and warning instruments to be in good working order.
- 3.5t tipper or dropside vehicle meeting all Road Traffic Act requirements.
- Access to a secure compound or site.
- Access to appropriate loads and ability to load and clear up.
- Appropriately rated & working ratchet straps.
- Visibility of site safety rules and induction plan for trainer.
