When we think about winter driving, snow and ice are often the first things that come to mind. But the challenges facing drivers begin long before the first snowfall.
Shorter days, reduced visibility, wet roads, lower temperatures and rapidly changing conditions can all make everyday journeys more demanding.
For organisations with employees who drive for work, now is a good time to ask a simple question: are your drivers prepared for the season ahead?
Preparation starts before the journey.
Winter conditions can change quickly, so preparing both the driver and vehicle is important.
TTC recommends allowing extra time before setting off, ensuring windows are fully cleared, and, where possible, planning routes that favour major roads, which are more likely to have been cleared and gritted. Most importantly, safety should take priority over punctuality when bad weather arrives.
Drivers should also consider carrying a winter kit, including essentials such as warm clothing, a torch, a fully charged mobile phone and a portable charger, a first aid kit, a high-vis vest, de-icing equipment, and a hazard warning triangle.
Don’t overlook visibility.
Winter driving isn’t only about road surface conditions.
Reduced daylight and poor weather can make seeing — and being seen — more difficult. Drivers should check that lights are working and clean, and remember that automatic headlights may not always activate in dull conditions or fog.
It’s one of the reasons why preparing employees for winter should consider night driving and visibility as well as snow and ice.
Adapt your driving to the conditions.
When snow and ice do arrive, smooth driving becomes particularly important.
