How Sarah turned a childhood dream into a career with TTC

We spoke to one of our trainers Sarah on why she decided start a career with TTC.

Who is Sarah – I’ve been in the Fleet Industry for over 30 years, in a variety of different roles which included national and international. I initially moved to TTC to sell road safety to corporate companies It was in doing this I realised that I enjoyed the safety and training aspect of the role. To be honest, it took me back to my days as a little girl with my blackboard in the back garden pretending to be a teacher to my teddies. A real spark ignited inside of me, and I discussed with the team what steps I would need to take to make this a reality.

They advised me that I needed a training qualification and so I completed an online AET (Award in Education and Training) Level 3 course. Once done, I then trained to become a trainer for a NDORS course (National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme). This was to deliver online sessions. Since that point, I have moved into classroom, other Road Safety courses and have been happily delivering for TTC for over 2 years.

What were the benefits of a career with TTC?

There are multiple reasons, which I can honestly say, that are real benefits of a career with TTC. They have a fantastic support team in the background planning and booking work for me (6 months in advance) into my calendar, which I manage to fit around my life. Their internal processes such as their platforms like Alaska make scheduling, planning, resources and info easy to access and use.

I personally feel, this is important (especially now being self-employed) is that TTC always pay on time and their invoice submission is easy, with a click of a button within Alaska. Working for TTC is also a great place to work for if you are starting out into the self-employed world. There is always someone at hand to advise and guide and they have training opportunities to even look at your accounts. The management team around you is supportive, available and beyond that there are so many trainer community groups (as they have over 600 trainers on their books) to share good practice, swop courses if needed and we all help and support each other.

What additional training do you need?

Like I said earlier, I had to qualify for my AET Level 3 to be a qualified trainer. This is a nationally recognised qualification, which I would advise anyone thinking of training as a career, to complete as it can open so many doors in the education arena. I then completed the NDORS Training through TTC. There is also a very strong focus for all trainers (mandatory and voluntary) to complete CPD Courses (Continuous Personal Development). For example, I have recently completed a Deaf Awareness course so I can provide extra support for any impaired hearing clients and have attended a Masterclass in Classroom and Online delivery provided by TTC.

I would also advise observing and working in classrooms as each course is delivered by 2 trainers and you can pick up some great tips when you work with others, some of whom have been doing this for many years! This has led me to learn and deliver other courses such as NMAC (National Motorway Awareness Courses) and with TTC being the largest online training provider of Road Safety and now having other strands in their portfolio (Corporate, Health and Safety, Construction), there are so many opportunities to develop and grow within their business (which they actively encourage)

Why do you enjoy about your career with TTC?

I am Self Employed, and I have to say the regular work they provide, which is always scheduled in advance, allows me to plan my working and funds with ease. TTC’s easy to use online tools (Alaska and Continnum) are a great benefit – ranging from work tasks and schedules through to uploading certificates, driving licence and compulsory courses such as Modern Slavery, Inclusion and Diversity and GDPR. Their CPD Training and Events are fantastic and accessible online as well as in venue at points.

Processes are important but to be honest, it’s the people at TTC are amazing, lovely to work with and will support you in any way you need. One of the managers, for example, arrived early at one of my classroom courses to help me set up the tables, as he knew I was alone. You do feel respected, valued and listened to and I know I can pick up the phone when I need to and someone will be there. So you get the benefits of working for yourself, with a professional corporate company behind you all the way!

What would you say to someone considering applying?

If you are starting out working for yourself and you need regular work, with good contacts and people you can reach out too, then TTC is a great place to start! They have all the tech you need to get you started, they run tools to help you plan your work in advance, so that you can see how much you will earn, because working for yourself is a worry, when you need to balance the budget. With TTC the worry around money coming in will be removed, the courses are there for you to do! You will receive all the support you need from mentoring experts to get you up and running, they run a buddy system to give continued support as you get going in your training career and you can reach out to your mentor or TTC community anytime to get reassurance or ask questions. To finish, joining TTC for me, has been a life changing experience and one, I wish had done years ago. Not only do I have freedom, flexibility and stability, but I was also able to fulfil that lifelong dream of that little girl with her chalkboard in the back garden!
