If English is not your first language<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\n

All our courses are delivered in either English or Welsh. They include written content and a group discussion, which you must participate in.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are not fluent in English or Welsh, or are hard of hearing, we encourage you to bring an interpreter or translator to help you. There is no extra fee to bring an interpreter, but you must tell us who they are before you come to your course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is your responsibility to arrange for an interpreter and to let them know what they need to do and when.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can ask any family member, friend or professional interpreter as long as they are at least old enough and have good language skills. Interpreters must be at least 16 years old for NDORS courses and 18 years old for court-referred courses, such as drink drive courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should you require a British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreter or a speech-to-text reporter, please c<\/a>ontact us<\/a> to discuss your requirements, as TTC offers BSL courses, delivered by a BSL-qualified trainer. Alternatively, TTC can also supply a speech-to-text reporter or BSL interpreter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember that you must let us know that you intend to bring an interpreter and also tell us who they are before<\/strong> you attend your course. If you do not do this, you may be excluded from the course. You will need to pay an extra fee to book another course.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

What to do:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Decide if you need an interpreter to help you<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask someone who is over-16 (over-18 for court-referred courses) and who can speak your own language and English fluently<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you book your course with TTC, tell us you are bringing an interpreter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before your course, tell us the name of your interpreter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure your interpreter knows what to do<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure your interpreter brings their own photo ID to the course<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go to the booking system<\/a> and type in the reference and PIN number from your police referral letter to log in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you reach Step 2 of the booking process, you will be asked if you have special requirements for attending a course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the “Your Requirements” screen (pictured), select “I speak a different language and will bring my own translator”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can select other options as well, or add additional details, if you need to. Give us as much information as you can, including the name of your interpreter if you know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After you have booked, you must contact us again to confirm the name of the person you will be bringing with you to act as an interpreter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can do this by contacting us with your reference details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do before your course<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
\n

If you did not tell us that you intend to bring an interpreter with you at the time you booked your course, it is not too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contact us as soon as possible with your reference details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have chosen to do your course online, it is very important that you make sure you can get online before the day of your course. Do this as soon as possible. Your interpreter can help you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instructions for interpreters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    \n
  1. If you are acting as an interpreter for someone taking a TTC course, you must be at least 16 years old (at least 18 years old for drink drive or court-referred courses) and have good language skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Prior to attending the course, please make sure the attendee understands the pre-course paperwork. Particular attention is drawn to the requirement to be ready and available on time and that both you and the attendee will need to bring your own original photographic identification (driving licence, passport etc.). Digital copies are not accepted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. There will be other clients on the course. You will need to verbally interpret all that is being said by the trainer and other clients for the person you are helping, so do not be afraid to speak throughout the course.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. For online courses, please mute your audio \/ microphone when translating for the client. Remember you will need to unmute to relay any questions, comments or answers from the person you are helping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. If a question is directed at the person you are helping, please translate the question and the reply. Do not give your own answer (which may well be different). Use their words exactly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. If the person you are helping is a close friend or family member, please do not allow your personal relationship to interfere with your interpreting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. If you have any questions yourself during the course, please do not hesitate to ask the trainer for clarification.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
