Our courses ensure that drivers are fully aware of their vehicle’s capabilities and differences to standard cars/vans.

How to safely operate them both on the public highway and in off road environments is fully covered.

4WD Off-Road Driver Coaching

Developing safer work policies and driver behaviours to reduce on & off-road incidents for those required to drive 4WD vehicles.

This course is LANTRA accredited (national training organisation for land based industries), developed and delivered by 4WD specialists.  

TTC has access to a number of off-road training centres around the UK. Customers should contact head office for details of their nearest centre.

Drivers experiencing serious off-road driving e.g. dealing with deep ruts, water, hill descent and ascent and driving on sand are recommended to take this Lantra accredited course. 

Drivers using a 4WD on flat firm ground are best suited to our On-Road Driver Coaching in their 4WD vehicle.

4WD off-road driver coaching is delivered by a professional driver trainer who will fully engage with the participants to maximise the learning experience, answer questions and act as a guide to enable each and every person attending to gain the absolute most they can from attending the session.

Who should attend

All businesses employing staff who drive 4WD off-road vehicles to visit business sites only accessible via unmade roads, tracks or cross country or they have the need for 4WD capability as part of their work and used in challenging environments.

Delivery method

4WD off-road driver coaching is delivered by a professional driver trainer who will fully engage with the participants to maximise the learning experience, answer questions and act as a guide to enable each and every person attending to gain the absolute most they can from attending the session.

Delivered in-vehicle to a maximum of two participants per 4WD vehicle.

TTC has access to a number of off-road training centres around the UK.  Customers should contact Head Office for details of their nearest centre.

Course outline

Introduction and Theory Session

Introduction to the course outline, including:

  • Health & Safety briefing
  • Introduction to the vehicle and format of the day
  • Theory element of 4WD driving and vehicle characteristics
  • Personal training obectives

The Vehicle

  • Identify the controls, systems and components of the vehicle
  • Undertake pre-start checks
  • Reporting faults and defects
  • Preparation of vehicle for off road use

Decision Making

  • Complete decision making exercises around negotiation of obstacles, appreciating own driving skills and capabilities of the vehicle
  • Understand legal and practical requirements for travelling on road

Health & Safety

  • Compliance with legal requirements and safe practice
  • Identify risks associated with off road vehicle use
  • Appropriate PPE
  • Common causes of off road incidents

Practical driving and training

  • Assess suitability of ground and route
  • Perform a failed hill climb
  • Drive over mixed terrain
  • Perform an onsite risk assessment
  • Identify loading and towing capacities
  • Identify the dangers of vehicle recovery /self recovery

Course review

  • Discuss outcomes
  • Revisit ‘what do you want to get out of today’
  • Advice for ongoing development/improvement
  • LANTRA certificate
