Balanceability

For schools and leisure centres – learn-to-cycle programme for children 2½+

Balanceability is the UK's only afPE-approved learn-to-cycle programme for children aged 2½ and upwards.

The nationwide programme is available to nurseries, schools, local authorities and leisure sites. We supply all the equipment, resources and staff training for you to deliver the programme at your own site.

Did you know?
Nearly half of the UK’s 6-year-olds are unable to ride a bike, which means they miss out on the countless benefits of being able to cycle. Our unique Balanceability programme has been designed with child development experts and cycling professionals so that all children have the opportunity to learn to ride a bike. We want to embed cycling into the lives and psyches of all children!

Learn to ride with a balance bike

Children learn to crawl before they walk and walk before they run, so why expect a child to progress from riding a tricycle and/or bicycle with stabilisers to riding a bicycle without? The opportunity to master the key aspects of static and dynamic balance is essential.

Our Balanceability programme focuses on developing a child's ability to balance before teaching them to pedal. Children begin by learning to ride a ‘balance bike’ – a bike with no pedals and a lower centre of gravity than a typical pedal bike – and build their confidence staying upright on 2 wheels. From there we transition the children onto pedal bikes with great success.

Balanceability combines unique ergonomic balance bikes with a schedule of fun activities that build confidence, spatial-awareness and dynamic balance skills, enabling young children to cycle without ever needing stabilisers. 94% of children aged 4 to 6-years-old are able to safely ride a pedal bike at the end of the programme.

Balanceability is the fundamental starting point for children's cycling and an excellent opportunity to promote active lifestyles at the earliest possible age. I can see it also provides a natural lead into Bikeability for Schools and I would encourage all schools to give children the opportunity to use balance bikes.
